Decode This launched in October 2006 as a free vehicle identification number (VIN) decoder for American-market cars and trucks, operated by VIN Hunter LLC. Over the years it has decoded millions of VINs for enthusiasts, dealers, and developers.

What set Decode This apart was its breadth: alongside modern vehicles, it decodes classic-car VINs from a wide range of manufacturers — an uncommon capability among online VIN decoders.

The service has now been rebuilt on a modern, faster platform — adding a full vehicle archive, a developer API, and richer decoding for classic VINs — while keeping the straightforward VIN lookups our users have relied on since 2006.
